| This has been the Week of the
Eagles. What a great time to celebrate the service and sacrifice
of our brave and heroic soldiers. They have been hosting this
event for years, but obviously with the conflict we're involved in it
takes on a greater significance. I have been so impressed with
this community's effort to embrace the military and their family
during the last six years. We have done an excellent job in
making those wives and family members feel welcome, while their
husbands and spouses are serving in the middle east. The Week of
the Eagles is a celebration of freedom, and a chance to just let your
hair down. During this month of military appreciation, I hope
you will show your gratitude toward the men and women of the armed
forces. Do something small like buy their lunch, or dinner or
something. You'll be surprised at how much they appreciate just
the smallest gesture of appreciation.
Speaking of the conflict in the middle
east. I had the opportunity to interview general Richard Cody
this week. He was here for the Week of the Eagles. General
Cody was once the division commander. Now, I have
interviewed a lot of soldiers during this recent war, and to the
person, they will not get involved in the "politics" of this
war. It amazes me, that with all the partisan bickering about
this war, and no matter what your opinion of the war is, you just
don't find many soldiers willing to "go there".
General Cody was more concerned about the soldier and his needs.
In his role as the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, he is responsible
for the needs of the soldier. He wants to make sure they have
the support they need, and that their families have the support they
need. I couldn't get him to once comment on the
"politics" of the war. He truly is a soldier, and he
serves at the pleasure of the President. That's a good thing.
This week has also been Law Enforcement
Memorial Week. The Clarksville police department, and the
Montgomery County Sheriff's office has had a series of events to draw
attention to their service and sacrifice. There was a memorial
service on Tuesday to remember those who have lost their lives in the
line of duty. There was marksmanship competitions, a flag
football game, and other events. I hope we all take a moment to
appreciate our front line law enforcement officers. We take them
for granted, but they are true hero's who respond each time we dial
911. While our soldiers fight the "enemy" abroad, our
local law enforcement agencies fight the "enemy" at
home. Please show your appreciation to them every chance you
get. They are here to protect and serve, and they do a great
job.
There hasn't been much happening on the
local political scene this week, but if I worked in county government,
I would stay out of the mayor's way. She came to office with a
stack of pink slips, and she's using them. Gees!
